You hear it all the time! The 21-day fix! But why 21 days?

Well research has shown that it takes 21 days to create a habit! Although this is true to some degree further studies show that it takes some people 3 months to a year to truly create a lifestyle change depending on the habits they choose. Of course, something simple like drinking a glass of water before bed, or adding a fruit to your breakfast is going to be a lot easier to do, sustain, and become a habit within that 21 day time frame.

So why are there so many 21-day challenges out there? Simply put, 21 days is a great starting point. It’s not a huge commitment, but if you stay committed you are bound to see results. Let’s face it in this age of instant gratification – we want to see results now! Plus, if it’s only 21 days and you don’t enjoy it or see the value it won’t last long. I’ll let you in on a little secret though. If you do like it and you stay motivated and repeat the ‘21 days’ 3 more times, you have almost reached the 90-day mark! With most people after 90 days it’s now a routine. Your first 3 weeks is more conscience competence. You are doing it but you are very aware of your actions. You are making the time. Pushing through the mental hurdles and in a way almost forcing yourself to do it. We all have gone to the gym for a month almost everyday, than you skip one day, 2 days and boom! Back to the old routine of tv and chips and it’s been over 2 weeks since you were active! That’s why 21 days is a great start but it is definitely a conscious effort! If you want to make the big changes it takes time!

After 90 days most routines begin to become unconscious competence. Just like brushing your teeth or showering. It’s something you do everyday without really thinking about it. The neural pathway has been created and you just do it. So, let’s start making your health and wellness a priority and soon it will be a walk in the park. Maybe literally! So like Nike says JUST DO IT! It’s either one day or day one! You decide!
